JEANIE COY AUSEON, Ph.D.
Mixed Media Fiber Artist

Art-study and making have been constants throughout my life. For many years I taught art and was a Fine Arts Curriculum Specialist and Coordinator in public education. In addition to my academic work in arts education, my keen interests in Interior Design and Landscape Architecture were fueled by studies at four professional design schools.

I currently work with mixed media on canvas, silk and cotton cloth. Though realism was dominant in past 2-D work, my work on cloth is abstract. I've developed a process in which I elaborate on the spontaneous interactions of permanent dyes to various forms of resist,(i.e., waxing, folding, stitching to “mask” portions of the cloth from the dyes). By interpretively printing, drawing and painting on the surface designs created by dye and resist interactions, I attempt to create the illusion of movement, balance and depth on a two dimensional surface. Much of my inspiration comes from the shapes, colors, textures and patterns in nature.

The ways in which my images engage viewers ultimately creates the meanings of my pieces. I’m comfortable with the fact that these images can have multiple meanings.
