Tracy Greenwalt’s latest exhibition “Ruby” is dedicated to the memory of her late mother. Conceived as an exploration of letting go, the work transforms cherished tangible items into new forms, giving them renewed life as texture under the artist’s enigmatic landscapes. Years of accumulated paper ephemera are layered and manipulated beneath the surface of each work. On closer examination, fragments of hidden imagery and text emerge. Through this transformation of the familiar into something new, the exhibition reflects on the intertwined themes of loss, renewal and continuity.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Drawing from elements of nature, historical references, and personal iconography, the artist crafts visual narratives that evoke a distinctly Midwestern Gothic sentiment – a quiet balance between beauty and decay, isolation and memory.

Weathering: A collection of Columbus Cityscapes

Weathering explores how weather and time shape our surroundings—how rain shifts the surface of a city and how daily life changes us as we move through it. While these paintings begin with familiar spaces in Central Ohio, they focus less on documenting specific landmarks and more on capturing the atmosphere.

Rather than relying on a specific narrative, the work utilizes the interplay of light and composition to evoke a distinct feeling—be it nostalgia, tension, solitude or energy. Viewers are invited to bring their own perspectives and histories to the work, discovering meaning through the simple act of looking.

How the collection came together

Many of the reference photos for this series came from drives home after evening figure drawing. Getting back into life drawing shifted the focus away from the final product and back to the quiet discipline of the process itself. Those studies won’t be on display, but that heightened awareness carried directly into how the roads and scenery were seen.

That practice naturally led into summer plein air painting. Working quickly within a two-hour window brought a fresh, spontaneous energy back to the artists practice. A sketchbook of these quick field studies will be on display alongside the finished paintings.
